Movie Synopsis:
Seth is a celestial guide in The City of Angels, helping humans make the transition over to the other side.
There are many angels watching over Los Angeles, invisible to the human eye yet helping in a myriad ways, each day assemblng on the beach at dawn to hear a celestial chorus as the sun rises.
Seth and his fellow angel Cassiel ask the newly passed what they liked best about living, and Seth records it in a notebook as he grows increasingly fascinated by the sensations of being human.
At the other end of the spectrum, Doctor Maggie Rice is at the cutting edge of keeping humans alive through medical expertise as a heart surgeon, propelled into asking herself the bigger questions about who or what is really in control of life and death when she loses a patient during a standard heart procedure. Watched over by an unseen Seth, who is drawn to her side, the two begin on a transformative journey that will change them both forever. Seth finds himself instantly drawn to Maggie and her plight and later that day uncharacteristically makes himself visible to her at the hospital, appearing to her as a mysterious visitor to whom she is nevertheless strangely drawn.
A friendship and soon a magnetic attraction begins between the two, transcending the limitations of each of their situations, Seth without any human senses and Maggie in a relationship with one of her collegues. Increasingly tormented by a longing he believes can never be fulfilled, Seth visits Maggie’s next heart patient, Nathan Messinger, and to his surprise discovers he can sense Seth’s presence, revealing that he too used to be an angel but gave up eternity and chose to become human by taking ‘the jump’, ‘the fall’; making Seth aware that he too had freewill and could make this choice.
Maggie gradually begins to discover the true nature of her mysterious friend, at first refusing to believe it, but in time realising there was no way they could truly be together.
Will Seth give up eternity to be with Maggie? If so, will they live the rest of their lives together or will the human condition and twists of life deliver a cruel blow that keeps them forever apart?
