It Could Happen To You (1994)
A cop. A waitress. A lottery ticket.
The Cop with a heart
Charlie is a New York City Cop with a heart of gold, married to increasingly frustated Muriel who hankers for more luxury in her life.
When Charlie wins the jackpot on the lottery with the numbers Muriel says were given to her by her dead father (except Charlie had mistakenly got one number wrong) their different outlooks on life put a strain on their marriage, especially as Charlie followed through on his promise to a waitress, Yvonne, to give her half his lottery ticket winnings or double the tip, in lieu of a tip he was unable to pay the day before. Yvonne had only that day been made bankrupt by her husband from whom she was separated but unable to afford a divorce from. After dividing the winnings between them Yvonne was able to buy the diner where she was working for a cruel boss and Charlie carries on in his job as a cop until he was wounded in a robbery in a local store. Muriel on the other hand, angry to lose half of what she considered hers by rights, was able to indulge her materialistic side with luxury clothing and real estate deals. While recovering from his injury Charlie and Yvonne begin a friendship and spent their days being generous with their money, giving to the local community in benevolent ways including paying for everyone’s train ticket home in the rush hour. When Muriel discovers how Charlie has been spending their money, she throws him out of the house and begins divorce proceedings, driving him and Yvonne closer together and finally losing all of their money to Yvonne in a bitter and manipulative law suit. Filled with guilt that she has ruined Charlie’s marriage, and facing destitution again, Yvonne tries to remove herself from Charlie’s life. Charlie has other ideas and so do the people of New York who find their own way to repay Yvonne and Charlie for their kindness.
