Movie Synopsis:
Atlantic City cop Rick Santoro has ambitions for his local well connected cop status to grow until he becomes mayor, but with every intention of continuing to abuse his power in the kind of low level corruption he has happily succeeded in for years.
Excited to be at the heavyweight boxing championship, an exuberant Rick, while fielding calls from both his wife and girlfriend, extracts cash from an unwitting victim, to place a bet on the ‘Champ’ to win. He is really there to provide a police presence with his best friend and former colleague, now highly decorated U.S Navy Commander Kevin Dunne, for an important audience member, The Secretary of Defence.
In the roar of the crowd the champ goes down early and while Rick is distracted and his collegue is off investigating a suspicious looking person, the secretary is shot, and Rick finds himself at the center of an assassination investigation, looking for a young woman who had been talking to the secretary at the time of his shooting. Gaining different versions from different viewpoints, the story is interwoven with alternate flashbacks to the events leading up to and during the assassination.
Piecing events things together using surveillance videos, Rick begins to uncover a conspiracy of unimaginable proportions, putting him in a position where he has to choose whether to involve himself in corruption of the biggest kind, or perform his duty as an honest cop.
Trailer:
Nicolas Cage movie quote:
“I wanted this guy not to be your typical image of a New York detective, with a cigarette and a leather jacket. I wanted him to be more of a bon vivant in attitude and attire. I fell in love with this rust colored suit, and I thought the Hawaiian shirt worked well with it. He’s a man of questionable taste.
Interesting Facts:
The long opening scene at the beginning of the movie where Nicolas Cage’s character is first introduced to us was all done in one long shot.
