Sonny is a powerful, painful and beautiful story set in New Orleans and centered around Sonny, newly returned from the army and trying to begin a new life away from his former one as a young male gigalo, and the underground lifestyle of his Mother’s chosen career running a brothel.
After a promised legitimate job falls through and seeing that life on ‘the other side’ is no less seedy, Sonny eventually returns to the life he knows best, much to the delight of his Mother Jewel and his former customers, but dashing the private hopes of his father that he could escape the family business once and for all. While Sonny was away Jewel employed a beautiful young woman Carol to work for her and she and Sonny soon fall in love and begin to do jobs together as a couple. Carol has dreams of her and Sonny escaping the life together, but he becomes more and more disillusioned and resigned to what he begins to feel is his fate.
Nicolas Cage movie quotes:
“Sonny took a little while to find it’s audience, but I’m very proud of that movie, especially with the performances.”
“I was very adrenalized by the experience. I was excited to be surrounded by so many creative people in all walks of the filmmaking process”
Nicolas Cage had seen the script for Sonny years earlier and knew he had to have a movie that was character driven and of an alternative subject matter to begin his directing career.
The yellow jacket worn by Nic for his character Acid Yellow, once belonged to Liberace, Nic bought it at an auction.
In an interview on 28th July 2010 Nic answered a question from Cagealot Castle about Sonny and directing again!
